Valparaiso’s city elevators
Valparaiso used to have 30 elevators, fifteen of which are still functioning today. They are national monuments and world heritage but also part of the daily life of all porteños (the people of Valparaiso). You haven’t experienced Valparaiso if you haven’t ridden at least one elevator. The ascensores are convenient and fun, especially when you go down as the descent is pretty steep.
Which elevators do we recommend? The oldest is Ascensor Concepcion (1880), Artilleria offers the best view, el Peral gives you a splendid insight in its mechanics and the only real vertical elevator is Polanco. A ride costs between CLP 100 and CLP 250 depending on the elevator.
