On every square in Valparaiso people are practising the cueca, Chile’s national dance. The cueca is all about courting: the male dancer imitates a rooster, dancing proudly for his ‘hen’ to seduce her. Every region and even every couple has its own version and that’s OK because this is a real “folk’s” dance, there is no single official version. Important attributes are: a (white) handkerchief and in the Valparaiso region also a cowboy outfit if you’re aiming for the country-version. If you are planning on dancing the cueca, remember men should always try to get the women to look into their eyes by the end (this means your courting was successful!).
