everybody dance now – the cueca
Chile is dancing its way to the independence day on september 18. On every square in Valparaiso people are practising the cueca, Chile’s national dance. The cueca is all about courting: the male dancer imitates a rooster, dancing proudly for his ‘hen’ to seduce her. Every region and even every couple has its own version and that’s OK because this is a real “folk’s” dance, there is no single official version. Important attributes are: a (white) handkerchief and in the Valparaiso region also a cowboy outfit if you’re aiming for the country-version. If you are planning on dancing the cueca, remember men should always try to get the women to look into their eyes by the end (this means your courting was successful!).
