An empanada is as typical porteño (from the port) as it is Chilean and Latino. Valparaiso is known for its Empanada de Mariscos: stuffed pastry fried in oiled or cooked in the oven. It is served with aji picante (spicy chili sauce) or with Pebre. The latter is a very popular cold sauce made of onion, tomato, chile peppers and coriander.
Seafood and shellfish in Chile come in a wide variety and are very popular because of their freshness and low price. You won´t find locos, mussels, clams, piure, sea urchins like the ones you eat in Chile!
Empanadas come with whatever stuffing you can imagine. Another typical Chilean Empanada is Pino: minced beef with onions, spices, olives and a quarter of a boiled egg.
